PTA denies YouTube ban rumors in Pakistan

PTA denies YouTube ban rumors in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday has denied the rumor about ban on YouTube in Pakistan.

The telecom regulator issued a statement clarifying that an old press release, which has resurfaced online, is causing confusion regarding YouTube’s current status in Pakistan.

“PTA has noticed that a press release from September 2012, regarding YouTube’s shutdown in Pakistan following Supreme Court orders, is being circulated again,” the statement stated.

“PTA clarifies that the content being circulated is outdated and irrelevant to the current circumstances.”

“At present, no instructions have been issued by PTA to block or shut down YouTube or any other social media platform.”

The PTA also urged the public to confirm such information through official sources, such as its website and verified social media accounts.

In related developments, India recently banned more than two dozen Pakistani YouTube channels for allegedly sharing “provocative” content in the wake of an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu Kashmir (IIOJK).

The original ban was imposed by then-Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in response to protests triggered by the controversial film Innocence of Muslims. However, the PTA confirmed that the 2012 press release is no longer applicable.
