‘India provoking war hysteria’: PM Shehbaz calls US over rising tensions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during which the two leaders discussed rising tensions between Pakistan and India.

The prime minister conveyed Pakistan’s perspective on the Pahalgam incident and urged the US to play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s desire to work closely with the U.S. administration and extended his good wishes to President Donald Trump. He also called on Washington to pressure New Delhi into avoiding provocative statements and actions that risk further destabilising regional peace.

Shehbaz Sharif categorically rejected Indian attempts to link Pakistan with the Pahalgam attack and reiterated Pakistan’s demand for an impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.

Condemning terrorism in all its forms, the prime minister noted that Pakistan has lost over 90,000 lives and suffered economic losses exceeding $152 billion in its fight against terrorism.

He expressed grave concern over India’s aggressive posture, calling it a “diversionary tactic” aimed at shifting attention away from domestic militant networks. He also raised the issue of India’s water aggression, noting that there is no provision for unilateral withdrawal from the Indus Waters Treaty. “This is a matter of life and death for 240 million people,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, PM Sharif said it remains the key to lasting peace in South Asia. He also recalled seven decades of Pakistan-US cooperation and stressed the need for continued collaboration in counterterrorism and economic development.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio thanked the prime minister for the detailed exchange and emphasised the importance of continued joint efforts for peace in the region.
